UPDATES:
  • Capital One improved airline transfer ratio but will lose JetBlue TrueBlue points as transfer partner on October 24, 2021.
  • Capital One is offering a 20% transfer bonus to Air France KLM Flying Blue points through September 30, 2021.

Certain Capital One credit cards can earn reward miles that are flexible in a way that you can use those miles to redeem for flights, hotels, vacation packages, and more via the Capital One Travel portal.

However, you can also transfer those miles to loyalty programs that partner with Capital One. Your Capital One miles can be worth so much more when redeeming them this way. The way it works is you can transfer your Capital One miles to an airline for their frequent flyer miles and then use those miles to redeem for a flight when the airfare is high.

The minimum miles Capital One requires for the transfer is 1,000 miles. Transfer ratios vary from one loyalty program to another, so be sure to pay close attention to that. See the chart below:

UPDATE: October 7, 2021 - Capital One increased the transfer ratio to 1:1 for all their airline partners, except for EVA Airways.

How To Transfer Capital One Miles To Airline and Hotel Partners?

It is important to know that transferring Capital One to partners is a one-way street. You cannot transfer points back to Capital One once the transfer is complete.

It is possible to perform Capital One miles to partners transfer online or on the phone. For online:
    • Sign in to your Capital One credit card account
    • Click on the eligible credit card.
    • Click on View Rewards
    • Scroll down until you see Convert Rewards and click on the Redeem Now button.
    • Click on Transfer Miles next to a loyalty program that you want to transfer. If it is your first time transferring Capital One miles to a specific loyalty program, Capital One will ask you for your loyalty program information before letting you transfer.
    • Follow the web interface to indicate how many Capital One miles you want to transfer. Simply follow the prompts to finalize the transfer.

Should You Transfer Capital One Miles To Airline and Hotel Partners?

It is important to keep in mind that you cannot transfer loyalty program points back to Capital One once the transfer is complete. The rule of thumb is, transfer only if you know you are going to use those airline miles or hotel points. Use these as a guideline to help you make a decision:
    • Search and confirm the award availability of the flight that you want.
    • Understand how that mileage program works such as how to book, mileage expiration policy, award cancellation/change policy in case you have to cancel.
    • If you cancel, will you be able to use those miles/points later on?

Generally speaking, the speculative transfer can have a negative impact that you are stuck with a particular airline's frequent flyer miles and are not able to use those miles. Airlines can devalue their award chart and so can hotels, and most programs have policies in place that those unused points can be expired.

From time to time, Capital One offers transfer bonuses that can be lucrative for me personally to perform the transfer speculatively; however, the rule of thumb still applies here that I only transfer if I know I am going to use those miles. For example, I honestly think that Aeromexico Club Premier is one of the worst mileage programs out there. Their award booking site is very limited with search functionality and is almost impossible to use. Their award booking call center is also a nightmare to deal with. So in the end I do not care at all when Capital One offers any transfer bonus to Aeromexico Club Premier.

For what is worth, I have many favorite Capital One transfer airline partners such as Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Avios, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Qantas Frequent Flyer, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer.

As far as hotel partners go, it is nice to see that Capital One miles can be transferred to the Accor hotels program ALL Accor Live Limitless. Accor is one of the hotel's rewards programs out there that are very difficult to accrue points. It's a shame because their hotels are quite good actually. I rarely transfer points to participating hotel partners unless I need to top off my hotel's rewards account for a memorable award night stay somewhere in the world. The ability to transfer Capital One miles to Wyndham Rewards is also a great addition to the Capital One Rewards, especially now that Wyndham partners with Vacasa that offers vacation rental properties range from a studio condo to a beach cottage, a ski cabin, or an entire house rental.
