Should you buy loyalty rewards points speculatively?
Points are not ideal long-term investments, and you should not buy points speculatively. Airlines and hotels can devalue their award chart any time they want to, with or without notice.
The main principle for buying points is to buy only when you need them or have immediate use of those points in mind in a short-term period. The two main driving factors for me personally to buy points are:
- I need to top off my loyalty account to redeem for award travel.
- It is more expensive to pay for a flight ticket or hotel stay than miles and points.
When does it make sense to buy loyalty rewards points?
- Points are not for investment. Don’t buy them just to save or hoard them.
- Have use of those points in mind in a short-term period.
- Top off your account to redeem for award travel.
- Watch for points bonus sales that you will benefit from the purchase promotions. Make sure to subscribe to our blog posts below to let you know when the points sales return.

Do you earn loyalty rewards points when you use points to redeem for a flight or a free hotel stay?
Unfortunately, Not. You do not earn airline miles when you use miles to redeem for a flight. Similarly, you do not earn hotel points when you use points to redeem for a free night stay. Therefore, do factor in that when you decide whether to buy and use points or pay with cash outright. Remember, cash is the king!
