I earned a Marriott Free Night 85k Certificate through the American Express Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card. I used the free night certificate to redeem for a one-free night stay at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort in Maui, Hawaii. The credit card also offers me an automatic Marriott Platinum Elite status for being a cardholder, which helped me score a room upgrade at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort.
While the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort is nice, the elite breakfast benefit could be better. Here’s a full review in detail.

Sunset at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort |
Wailea Beach Resort did not start out as a Marriott Bonvoy property. Marriott bought out the former resort, remodeled it, and rebranded it under the Marriott brand.
As its name suggests, Marriott Wailea Beach Resort is located in the Wailea area where Andaz Maui and Grand Wailea are also at. So if you are looking to split your award stays in Maui between these resorts, they are within walking distance of one another. A Wailea shopping plaza is also nearby, so you are not stuck at the resort for dining and entertainment.
Moreover, Marriott Wailea Beach Resort is more of an oceanfront resort than a beachfront resort, and the resort does not have a beach.

Room Upgrades
As a Marriott Platinum Elite member, I proactively requested an Ocean View room upgrade via their online form sent to me a few days before my stay. When the chat feature became available within the Marriott Bonvoy app, I also inquired about the possible upgrades. I was told that the reservation was noted for an ocean view upgrade.
On arrival, I had to ask one more time for a room upgrade available for Marriott Platinum Elite members. The friendly girl at the front desk offered me two options:
- Partial Ocean View King Room or,
- Junior Suite With A Resort View Room
Each room type has a balcony. After quickly discussing it with my travel companion, we decided to go with the Partial Ocean View King Room. We would have chosen the Junior Suite With A Resort View Room if we had stayed longer than one night.
I appreciate that the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort offered a complimentary upgrade to a Junior Suite for Marriott Platinum Elite members. Hence, it comes down to whether you want to stretch your room values further because the Junior Suite is obviously more expensive than the standard king room. The Partial Ocean View King Room is only one category higher than the standard start-up Garden View King Room with a balcony.
Wailea Beach Resort Does Not Take Marriott Suite Night Awards
Speaking of room upgrades, it’s worth mentioning that Marriott Wailea Beach Resort does not accept Marriott Suite Night Awards. In other words, you cannot use Marriott Suite Night Awards earned from the Marriott Annual Gift Choice Benefit after achieving Marriott Platinum Elite status and above for an existing reservation at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort.
Partial Ocean View Room Review
The Partial Ocean View King Room at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort offers exactly what we were looking for: a comfortable stay and a balcony with an ocean view. To see the ocean view, you can stand and lean over a little bit or angle your chair on the lanai/balcony a little while seated.

Views from the room |
The room is on the top 8th floor, number 818. The room has a good king-size bed, a small couch, and another chair. The bed is comfortable, but the pillows are too soft/low for me. Here are some pictures:

The bathroom could be better, nothing special.

The lanai (a.k.a balcony) has a table and a couple chairs, overlooking the lush green resort view and a partial ocean view.

Marriott Club Lounge
Marriott Wailea Beach Resort does not have a club lounge for Marriott Bonvoy elite members.
Welcome Amenity
As a Marriott Platinum Elite member, I was offered the following welcome amenity choices:
- 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points or Light Continental Breakfast
- Two Mai Thai drink vouchers

In addition, I also received the following gifts at check-in:
Food & Beverage Credits
There are no food and beverage credits at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort for Marriott Bonvoy elite members other than the two strong Mai Thai drinks vouchers mentioned above.
Continental Breakfast
The elite breakfast benefit at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort is disappointing. The resort only offers a light continental breakfast that consists of a pastry, a fruit cup, and coffee or tea from the on-site coffee houses Starbucks or Whale’s Tale. In other words, no hot eggs and meat breakfast items. When questioned, Marriott Wailea Beach Resort stated that because the breakfast restaurant Humble Market Kitchin on-site is not owned by the property (though you can charge the bill to your room), they cannot offer complimentary buffet breakfast to Marriott elite members.

The light continental breakfast is available for two guests, so you and one guest each can enjoy a pasty, a fruit cup, and coffee or tea.

Dining
There are a few dining choices at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort. The price is, of course, the resort’s outrageous price. However, I strongly recommend the main restaurant on site called Humble Market Kitchin. They have Happy Hour if you want to save money. They have draft beers for $6, cocktails for $10, and an appetizer for $10. Those appetizers are not small plates, so you can enjoy them as your entree. Between us two, we paid for three alcoholic drinks and two appetizers for about $60, including tips. That’s amazing for Hawaii’s resort dining. The Happy Hour is also good through 6:30pm too. Please contact the resort for the latest information on the Happy Hour operating times at the Humble Market Kitchin.

If you do not want to eat at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort, you can always walk to the Wailea shopping plaza and enjoy other dining venues.

Marriott Wailea Beach Resort has a resort fee of $40 before taxes.
Unfortunately, the resort fee is not waived whether you pay cash or redeem free nights for your stay with Marriott Bonvoy points.

We did not utilize early check-in at Marriott Wailea Beach Resort, but the regular check-in time is 4pm.
Late Check-out
When we asked for a late check out at 4pm, the friendly girl at the front desk gladly honored our request as we were there for only one night. However, guaranteed 4pm late check out is one of the Marriott Platinum Elite benefits.
The regular check-out time is 12pm.

Swimming Pool
Marriott Wailea Beach Resort Swimming Pool |
About four (4) swimming pools are at the Marriott Wailea Beach Resort.
- One swimming pool has an upper and a lower pool. The lower pool can be a good spot to enjoy the sunset. See the photo above.
- The Serenity pool is located in the middle of the resort, and its infinity pool offers a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset every night. The pool is more of an adult pool, and there are plenty of free lounge chairs and seats on the lawn too. Guests like to frequent there for swimming and enjoying the sunset.
- The Adventure pool has two big water slides: one is enclosed, and another one is open.
- There are also a couple small slides for young ones.
- The pool is also shallow, perfect for family guests.
- Also, to get on the big water slides, you must have a wristband to prove that you are a guest. The staff told us that there were lots of pool hoppers out there!
- Quick Tip: If you do not like the sun, there’s a little pool section with lounge chairs behind the waterfall, shaded all day, and fewer people frequent the area. You also have access to the swimming pool, all to yourself, if no children are present.
- All swimming pools are comfortably heated.

Beach
Marriott Wailea Beach Resort is more of an oceanfront resort than a beachfront resort. There’s no direct access to the sandy beach from the resort, and only lava rocks at the front of the resort. Therefore, the resort’s name is misleading. See the picture below.
