We had a one-night “layover” in Phoenix before taking our first-class lie-flat Hawaiian Airlines flight to Honolulu. There’s a Hyatt Category 3 Tempe Mission Palms hotel that offers a complimentary shuttle to/from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). The room rates for PHX airport hotels that day were above at least $200 per night, so I decided to use one Hyatt Free Night Award certificate to redeem for one free night’s stay.

Location

The Tempe Mission Palms location is good. Located in downtown Tempe, Arizona, and by the ASU campus, the hotel is within walking distance of quite a few restaurants and bars. There’s also a hiking trail by the hotel if you are up for some hiking up to a small hill.

Room Upgrade

The standard suites were not available for a complimentary upgrade as the hotel had a conference group, but we got upgraded to a Junior Suite.

The standard room for the Hyatt Free Night Award certificate was only the King Bed ADA room available, but I asked Hyatt to leave a note saying that we did not need the ADA room and appreciated an upgrade.

Room Review

The assigned Junior Suite room is on the 2nd floor, offering easy access to the fitness room and outdoor swimming pool, which are also located on the same floor. Meanwhile, the property has four floors, and our corner Junior Suite number is 2017.

Once you enter the room, a walkway leads to a working desk on the right and a bathroom on the left.

Because it’s a Junior Suite, both the living and bedrooms are in one room. The bed is comfortable, but the pillows are a bit too hard for me. In addition, there’s another seating chair, a sofa, a coffee table, and a TV on the wall playing the World of Hyatt program. The room overall is clean and spacious.

Furthermore, there are quite a few windows in the room, but the view is so-so. It is mainly the hotel ground, but the palm trees are beautiful.

The bathroom is nice and clean, with a walk-in shower, but I did not like it.

One thing that I dislike and want to warn you about, though, is that because of the hotel’s downtown location, nightclub noises in the area can be bothersome. In that case, I recommend you reach out to the hotel and request a room that’s far away from the noise. I am more sensitive to noises, and thus, I could hear the music until around 1 AM from our second-floor Junior Suite room, and it wasn’t even on a weekend.

Club Lounge

Tempe Mission Palms is a Destination hotel brand, and therefore, there’s so no club lounge for Globalists.

Welcome Amenity

None.

At check-in, we were offered two bottles of water, and the receptionist also informed us that there were two complimentary bottles of water inside the room.

Food & Beverage Credits

None

Globalist Breakfast

As a Hyatt Globalist, you also get a complimentary buffet breakfast for two at the on-site restaurant Mission Grille.

Dining

Tempe Mission Palms has on-site restaurants, but drinks are expensive there. As a result, I recommend you go out and enjoy food and drinks nearby instead. There are quite a few dining and bar options within walking distance of the hotel.

Destination Fee

When you redeem a free night’s stay with the World of Hyatt program, there’s no destination fee. Otherwise, the Destination Fee is $19.95 before tax.

Temp Mission Palms is a pet-friendly hotel. However, the pet fee is low. The hotel charges a $100 deposit with a $25 non-refundable fee.

Internet/Wi-Fi

Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi is available and requires no password. You connect to the Hyatt Wi-Fi.

Bottled Water

Yes, there are two big bottled water inside the room. All Hyatt elites can enjoy them for free, while non-elites must pay $5 per bottle.

Early Check-In

I arrived an hour before the regular check-in time, 3 PM, but the room was ready.

Late Check-Out

I did not request a late check-out as our flight left early morning from Phoenix to Honolulu. But the regular check-out time is noon.

Spa

The Tempe Mission Palms Hotel does not have a spa, and the only “spa” in the hotel is the jacuzzi hot tub at the swimming pool.

Fitness Center

The fitness room is on the second floor, and that’s also where the pool is.

In-Room Safe

None

Robes & Slippers

None

Swimming Pool

The pool at Tempe Mission Palms is an outdoor pool on the second floor. It’s cozy and surrounded by beautiful palm trees. Moreover, the jacuzzi is attached to the pool, and there are lounge chairs and a small pool canteen as well.

The pool is semi-heated, but it still feels cold in the February weather to swim in. Lastly, the pool opens from 6 AM to 10 PM.

It’s also worth mentioning that, sometimes, you can also hear or see flights fly by so that aviation fans may like that.

Tempe Misson Palms Airport Shuttle

Airport shuttle is complimentary and included in the Destination Fee.

The airport shuttle service is on request only. Therefore, you call after you land and arrive at the courtesy pick-up area. Also, going back to the airport from the hotel, the airport shuttle starts only at 5:30 AM and every 30 minutes after that until 10 PM. So keep that in mind. It also takes about 10-15 minutes between the hotel and the PHX airport, depending on the traffic.
