How does Capital One Refer A Friend work?
As a Capital One card member, you can earn more bonus cash back or Capital One miles based on your product by referring a friend to apply for a particular Capital One credit card. Hereโs how it works:
- You can refer just about anyone to apply for a Capital credit card that you have.ย
- When the person applies for that particular Capital One credit card using your personal referral link and is approved, you will receive the referral rewards in return.ย
- If you forget to include your referral link or your friend did not apply for the card using your referral link, you will not earn rewards, and that decision is final.ย
- Capital One Refer A Friend program limits how many referrals you can refer a Capital One credit card per calendar year (January โ December). In other words, if you max out your allowed referrals per calendar year, you will not earn any more referral rewards for that particular credit card until the following calendar year.ย
- Referral bonus may be subject to tax-related Form 1099-MISC reporting for the year you receive the bonus through Capital One Refer A Friend program.ย
Who is eligible for Capital One Refer A Friend?
Generally speaking, if you are a Capital One cardholder and your account is in good standing, your account can refer friends to Capital One credit cards to earn referral rewards.ย
According to Capital One:
If youโre a Quicksilver, QuicksilverOne, Savor, SavorOne, Venture, VentureOne, Platinum or Secured Mastercard cardholder in good standing, you may qualify for the card referral program. If any of your accounts are closed or in default, you wonโt be eligible for the referral program.
The easiest way to find out if your Capital One account is eligible to refer a friend is to simply sign in to your account via the Refer A Friend link below and see if you can generate a personal referral link for a particular Capital One credit card that you have.ย
How to generate a Capital One credit card referral link?
Capital One has a dedicated Refer A Friend site that you can go to. From there, you can generate a particular credit card referral link. To do that:ย
- Go to theย official Capital One Refer-A-Friend website
- Simply click the Sign In to Invite Friends green button and sign in to your Capital One account.ย
- A popup appears asking you Which account are you trying to service?ย The question basically asks which credit card you are trying to refer a friend to. Therefore, simply choose the account you wish to generate a referral link.ย
- Capital One system will generate a unique personal referral link for you to copy along with terms and limits on how many rewards you can earn from referrals. You then can send that link to whoever you want via email, social media, text messages, etc.ย
Can you refer yourself to a Capital One credit card?ย
No, you cannot.ย
While Capital One referral terms did not specifically spell out that you are not allowed to refer yourself for a Capital One credit card, the rule of thumb is to not do that because:
- You do not want to be on bad terms with Capital One and have your accounts involuntarily closed.ย
- You cannot generate a referral link for a particular Capital One credit card using another cardโs referral link, like the Amex Referral program.ย
- You cannot apply and are approved for the same Capital One credit card.ย
- Your friend you refer must be a new Capital One customer for that particular credit card.ย
Can you refer your spouse to a Capital One credit card?
Yes.ย
Capital One bankโs referral program is known as Capital One Refer A Friend, but you can refer just about anyone for a Capital One credit card. You can refer your friend, neighbor, roommate, spouse, domestic partner, colleague, and even a stranger eligible to apply for a Capital One credit card.ย
When does the Capital One referral bonus post?
According to Capital One Refer A Friend program terms:
Your account must be open and in good standing to receive a bonus in the referral program. If you upgrade or change your account to another Capital One credit card after you have shared your referral link or while any referred application or bonus is pending, you will not be eligible for a referral bonus. If you have other Capital One credit card accounts that are in default or charged off, you may not be eligible for the referral program. Please allow up to 8 weeks to see any bonus reflected in your account after each referral is approved.ย
Therefore, if your friend uses your referral link to apply for a Capital One credit card and gets approved, you can expect to receive the referral bonus 8 weeks afterward. Capital One is super slow when crediting you the referral bonus, so keep that in mind.ย

The simplest way to keep track of Capital One referrals is through theย Capital One Refer-A-Friend websiteย that you use to generate the referral link. A progress bar on the page shows how many rewards youโve earned for each approved referral. See below.ย

The easiest way to see how many Capital One referral bonus rewards youโve earned is to view the progress bar on the Capital One Refer-A-Friend website. The process is the same as you generate a referral link:
- Go to theย official Capital One Refer-A-Friend website
- Simply click theย Sign In to Invite Friendsย green button and sign in to your Capital One account.ย
- A popup appears asking youย Which account are you trying to service?ย The question basically asks which credit card you are trying to refer a friend to. Alternatively, whether cash or miles, you can see how many Capital One referral bonus rewards youโve earned is to view theย Earn Activityย within your Capital One account.ย
- Log into yourย Capital One online.ย
- Pick the Capital One credit card that you want to know about.
- Under the totalย REWARDS, click on theย Redeemย button.
- Click on theย Earn Activityย link.ย
- Scroll and see your referral rewards under theย Referral Bonusย section if you have any. See the screenshot below.ย

How to check a Capital One referral application status?ย
It is impossible to check who applied for a particular Capital One credit card through your unique personal referral link, the applicationโs status, etc. Capital One bank will not disclose that information due to individual privacy concerns.ย
If you refer a Capital One card to someone you know, the simplest way is to ask the person whether their application was approved.ย
