I encountered an issue after my Citi Business AAdvantage Business Credit Card statement closed. I only received the loyalty points for the money I spent, but I never received my AA miles from spending or the sign-up bonus in my AAdvantage Business account.

After a few weeks of calling and waiting, my AA miles finally showed up, and I could transfer them to my personal AAdvantage account. Therefore, I made this post to provide a data point to you if you are in the same boat.

AAdvantage Miles Not Posting to AAdvantage Business

American Airlines AAdvantage program has two platforms, personal and business, known as the AAdvantage Business. The basic concept is once your Citi business credit statement closes, Citi moves those miles to AA, and AA then deposits them into your AAdvantage Business account. Therefore, you wonโ€™t see those miles in your regular AAdvantage account.

Before reaching out to American Airlines or Citibank, be sure to check the following first:

  • Check your AAdvantage Business account to ensure miles are there. If not,
  • Chat or call Citibank and make sure that they have your AAdvantage Business account number as it appears in your account. It is NOT the same as your personal AAdvantage number.

Long story short, I have spent enough to meet the Citi Business AAdvantage Business Credit Card sign-up bonus spending requirement. My credit card statement clearly states the number of miles I earned, which should be available in my AAdvantage Business account. However, I did not see those miles.

Loyalty Points Posting to AAdvantage Personal

On the other hand, the amount I spent on the Citi Business AAdvantage Business Credit Card matches the loyalty points that AA posted to my AAdvantage Personal account. The posting date is one day after the cardโ€™s statement is closed.

My Experience Getting Miles Posted in AAdvantage Business

Itโ€™s worth noting that P2 in my household also holds a Citi Business AAdvantage Business Credit Card. Both loyalty points and AA miles appear in P2โ€™s AAdvantage Personal and Business correctly. The process was automatic and happened one day after the card statement closed, which definitely made me perplexed about my situation.

Fast forward, I called AAdvantage Business at 1-877-229-8278. After speaking to two representatives, they only told me to wait. They quoted the sign-up bonus could take 8 to 12 weeks:

American Airlines AAdvantageย bonus miles typically will appear as a bonus in your AAdvantage Businessย account 8-10 weeks after you have met the purchase requirements.ย

While I did not like the answer to that, fortunately, I did not have an immediate use of those miles. So, I decided to wait and do more research. I found out there are other users who may have experienced the same issue on FlyerTalk. The data points show that most of the users received the miles:

  • AA had to link or merge the accounts manually.
  • Do nothing and the miles eventually appear in the account.

Therefore, I decided to wait it out. Four weeks went by and I still did not receive my AA miles. So I decided to phone them again, and the helpful agent had to seek advice from his supervisor. He came back and told me to give it a couple more weeks before they could escalate the issue. I told the agent to keep good notes in my account in case I call back two weeks later. To my surprise, a week later, I received all my AA miles from the credit card in my AAdvantage Business account correctly.

Hereโ€™s my timeline:

  • On December 15 โ€“ My Citi AA Business card statement closed, showing the miles I earned correctly.
  • December 16 โ€“ AA loyalty points appear in my personal AA account, but miles are not in my AAdvantage Business account.
  • December 18 โ€“ I called AAdvantage Business customer service, and they told me to wait 8 to 12 weeks for the sign-up bonus to post, per the offerโ€™s terms.
  • January 15 โ€“ I called AAdvantage Business customer service again, and the supervisor told me to wait another two weeks before they could escalate the issue. More waiting.
  • January 20 โ€“ Both AA miles from spending and the sign-up bonus automatically show up in my AAdvantage Business account.

Conclusion

My experience is the data point in this post. While I do not know for sure whatโ€™s going on in the backend of AAdvantage Business and Citi, I suggest that you wait it out if you do not receive the miles you earn from the Citi Business AAdvantage Business Credit Card or the sign-up bonus. Save your time by contacting American Airlines or Citibank. You would be running around, and incompetent agents would only point fingers.

Moreover, according to the terms, it can take 8 to 12 weeks for the sign-up bonus miles to show in your AAdvantage Business account. Other card members may be luckier and get those miles quickly once the credit card statement is closed.
