ANA Mileage Club provides fantastic award redemption options for flights on both ANA and its Star Alliance partners. However, the program requires that award reservations be limited to round trips, open jaws, or multi-city itineraries. With a bit of creativity and flexibility, there are several ways to circumvent this rule.
ANA Open Jaw U.S. and Canada
While ANAโs award reservation rule requires round-trip bookings, it does not strictly enforce that you must originate and end in the same airport. In fact, the rule only states that you must originate and end in the same country.
Furthermore, ANA defines the United States and Canada as one country. Therefore, you can do one way from the U.S. and return to Canada and vice versa.

Open Jaw Different Regions
Additionally, ANAโs award reservation policy requires that your journey must begin and end in the same country. It means you can depart from and arrive at different airports, provided they are both within the same country definition.
Take a look at a couple of examples below:
Different Regions in the United States

Different Regions in the United States and Japan

ANA Award Mixed Classes
You may also combine classes if award seats are unavailable for your desired route. ANA will automatically determine the required miles based on the segment and class of service you choose rather than charging you the miles for the highest class of service.
Please be aware that changing the service class without cancellation is not permitted. In other words, if you wish to upgrade or change to a higher service class later, you must cancel your award ticket in accordance with the ANA Mileage Club award cancellation policy (more below) and rebook.

ANA Award Breaking Journey
Finding award availability can sometimes be limited for your preferred travel dates, service class, and multiple people. In such cases, you can create your desired itinerary by using ANAโs multiple cities/mixed classes search feature.
Take a look at the following example:
- I divided the journey from BKK to MLE because a single search for this route does not offer Business class availability; the segment from BKK to SIN is only available in Economy class. By breaking up the trip, I can secure a Business class seat for the longer flight from SIN to MLE.

Do ANA Miles Expire?
Yes. ANA Mileage Club miles expire 36 months (3 years) after earning them, and they cannot be reinstated or extended, except for top-tier ANA Diamond Service Period members, whose miles never expire.
How to Earn ANA Miles?
American Express Membership Rewards (MR) is the only flexible points currency that you can transfer to the ANA Mileage Club miles at a 1:1 ratio. Moreover, the transfer time is not instant. It can take 48 to 72 hours, so keep that in mind.
