Cambodia is one of the South East Asian countries that is rich with cultures and it is also the home of the World’s UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat Complex. Currently, in order to travel between Cambodia and United States, travelers need to transit through other countries such as South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, etc. The transit time can be quite long depending on which country travelers will be transiting through. Cambodia wants direct flights to USA to promote tourism and economy like its neighboring countries that have enjoyed a notable rise in bilateral tourism, investment and commerce.

Cambodia Wants Direct Flights to US
According to the Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), Cambodia wants to welcome any US airlines that wishes to operate direct flights to Cambodia. It is also known that since 2014, Cambodia had proposed allowing US-based Boeing aircraft to operate in Cambodian airspace, but Cambodia-US air service agreement was never attained. According to the SSCA’s spokesman, there are two issues remain:
- Technical terminology that’s still open up to negotiation.
- US companies want to conduct aircraft ground handling procedures themselves for security concerns.
US embassy in Phnom Penh spokeswoman Emily Zeeberg fully supports this move and said that:
The continued growth of Cambodia’s aviation sector provides opportunities for local and regional airlines to lease or purchase Boeing aircraft – and other US aviation technologies and services – to meet rising demand. Currently there are no Boeing aircraft based in Cambodia. An open skies agreement could allow US airlines to fly directly into Cambodia’s airports and help increase US tourism to Cambodia. The United States has open skies agreements with over 100 countries.
