We stayed in Madrid for two nights after the Canary Islands. I’ve never been to Madrid, so that was a good opportunity to explore Madrid before taking the Iberia A330 Business Class flight to Chicago.
Because it is February, hotel rates in Madrid are more affordable. As a result, I utilized the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts $200 credits twice—once last year and once this year—to book two nights at the Thompson Madrid by Hyatt. The Amex FHR rate is also Hyatt’s eligible rate to earn World of Hyatt points and elite night credits.
Thompson Madrid Location
Thompson Madrid hotel is ideally situated in the heart of Madrid, making it perfect for exploring the city attractions and highlights. Numerous restaurants and shops are also conveniently within walking distance of the hotel. In short, the location of Thompson Madrid is excellent.
Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts Benefits
When you book Thompson Madrid through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, you can expect to receive the following on-property benefits:

Thompson Madrid is part of the World of Hyatt program, and the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts rate is an eligible rate for Hyatt benefits in addition to the FHR benefits.

- Hyatt tier-qualifying night credits towards your elite status and Hyatt Milestone Reward.
- Unique Thompson brand for the Hyatt’s lifetime Hyatt Brand Explorer Award promotion.

- In addition, Amex FHR rate is also eligible to earn any Hyatt Promotions and Offers.
To receive all these Hyatt benefits in addition to the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits, you must provide your World of Hyatt loyalty number during the Amex FHR booking via Amex Travel. Amex Fine Hotels Room Upgrade
I booked Thompson Madrid through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, which resulted in an upgrade from a standard king room to a king terrace room on the 6th floor. According to the receptionist, it was a significant upgrade of three category levels higher than the standard room.
Thompson Madrid Room Review
Our room, number 629, has a modern design with a touch of boutique style. The bed also features luxury bedding, ensuring a comfortable stay.
The bathroom has a large sink, a European flush toilet (without a bidet), and a luxury walk-in rain shower.
While the room has a terrace, its lack of views makes absolutely no sense to me. Perhaps the terrace is for sunbathing, but visiting in February didn’t allow for that. I dislike the terrace as you are not sure what to see other than staring at the wall with some doodle arts.
Hyatt Club Lounge
Thompson Madrid does not have a club lounge.
Welcome Amenity
The Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program does not provide a welcome amenity upon arrival. However, we found a welcome card, an empty bottle of water branded with the Thompson name, and two olive oils as keepsakes in the room.
Moreover, Thompson Madrid also offers each check-in guest a vermouth drink and a Spanish omelet. The vermouth is a sweet wine with spices. Unfortunately, they ran out of omelets when we arrived late at night, but since we had just finished dinner, we opted for an alternative of orange juice and pastry.
Amex FHR Experience Credits
The Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program also offers a 100 USD (~92 Euros) credit for dining and room service for the entire stay. I attempted to book back-to-back stays to maximize this credit, but upon checking in, the staff confirmed that the credit applies to the entire stay, even if booked separately. This benefit aligns with Amex’s terms regarding back-to-back booking. Also, the food and beverage experience credit excludes gratuity and minibar.
I used the American Express Platinum Card $200 credit to book one night at Thompson Madrid last year and another night this year, for a total of $400 credit. It is considered a back-to-back booking and qualifies for receiving only one experience credit for the entire stay.
Complimentary Breakfast and Menu
The on-site restaurant offers complimentary breakfast as part of the Amex FHR benefit. It includes a variety of items, followed by a two-course a la carte menu for a choice of hot item and a dessert. See the menu below:
Thompson Madrid Dining
We dined at the on-site restaurant to use the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts $100 experience credit. After converting to Euros, the amount was less than $100. Moreover, the experience credit does not include any tips.
Unfortunately, the food at the restaurant inside Thompson Madrid was underwhelming and overpriced. We also had a cocktail at the bar, which was similarly overpriced. The following day, we explored local Spanish cuisine outside the hotel, which was far more delicious and affordable. Thompson Madrid dining options seem to aim for elegance while lacking in quality.
Internet/WiFi
Complimentary WiFi is available without a password and is fast.
Bottled Water
Thompson Madrid hotel does not provide complimentary water, although a bottle of water is available for 15 Euros inside the room. However, there is an empty bottle of water branded with Thompson inside the room that you can use to refill at the gym on the first floor.
Early Check-in
We did not take advantage of early check-in due to late arrival from a delayed flight into Madrid. However, Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts benefit includes a noon early check-in if available.
Late Check-out
The Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts program guarantees a 4 PM late check-out, which we utilized. The staff promptly processed our request during check-in.
Spa
Thompson Madrid does not have a spa.
Fitness Center
Yes, the fitness center is on the first floor.
In-Room Safe
Available in the closet’s drawer.
Robes and Slippers
Yes, Thompson Madrid provides those and they are available inside the bathroom.
Thompson Madrid Rooftop Pool
Thompson Madrid features a lovely rooftop pool, but it was closed for the season. I took the opportunity to visit and snap a photo, though. The rooftop also provides a great view of the Madrid city.
