Los Angeles (LAX) to Tokyo Haneda (HND)

DEP 00:50AM ARR 05:00AM (Next Day) – Red-Eye Flight
Duration: 11h40m
Seat number: 2K THE SUITE
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Redeemed: 55,000 Virgin Atlantic Points + USD 393.30 (It Now Requires 72,500 Virgin Atlantic Points)

The Verdict
PROS: Spacious seat, comfortable lie-flat bed, large entertainment monitor, suite with door, feels private, gentle friendly crew, free Wi-Fi voucher for the entire flight, clean bathroom every time, great Star Alliance First Class Lounge
CONS: The service is slower than I expected, but not too bad. Red-eye flight, so there were no full-course meals. The food tastes alright, there is a language barrier issue, not a cutting-edge hard product, and the door panels are low, offering no full privacy.

    Check-In

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a busy airport with many travelers daily and night. This is a red-eye flight, and the check-in counter only opens 3 hours before departure.
At the ANA check-in counter, classes of service lanes are clearly posted. The First Class lane is special because you’ll see a bright red carpet, and there’s no one there, and you get to the counter immediately to get the boarding passes issued after the documents are verified.

    First Class Lounge Access

ANA flights depart from the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT), so the lounge you want to access is the Star Alliance First Class Lounge. The lounge feels intimate because it’s a small quiet lounge exclusively for First Class passengers. The lounge offers a la carte dining and unlimited self-serving alcoholic drinks. You can also access the Star Alliance Business Class Lounge next door for more buffet food options, a bar, and shower suites.

It’s worth mentioning, too, if you have plenty of time before the ANA’s check-in counter opens, and can check in online, the next best lounge for ANA First Class or Business Class passengers is the LAX United Polaris Lounge in Terminal 7. The United Polaris and Star Alliance lounges connected airside through the tunnel, but it’s a walk, about 20 minutes one way. To avoid waking back and forth, you could clear security at Terminal 7, check out the United Polaris Lounge, then walk to Star Alliance First Class Lounge if waking isn’t an issue and you have plenty of time to spare. Boarding

Boarding for ANA First Class passengers is Group 1, along with their Diamond elite members. Group 1 boarding is after pre-boarding and before Group 2, which belongs to ANA Business Class passengers.

    Seats and Cabin

I have wanted to experience it since ANA revealed its new premium class seat on the Boeing 777: The Suite (First Class) and The Room (Business Class).
My first impression of the First Class THE SUITE seat was that it’s not a cutting-edge seat compared to other known airlines, but it’s huge and spacious with plenty of legroom.

One thing you can’t miss is the gigantic entertainment monitor.

The First Class cabin only has 8 suites and is not full that day. The cabin has a 1-2-1 configuration, so everyone has direct aisle access. Each suite also has a sliding door for semi-privacy because it’s not a fully enclosed panel up to the ceiling.

Overall, ANA First Class The Suite is large and comfortable to sit in whichever position you like. I truly enjoyed the experience.

    Drinks & Food

It was a red-eye flight, so I don’t know what types of food catering ANA offers onboard. The menu shows light snacks and various types of beverages. So it’s not a full 7-course meal that ANA typically offers for non-red-eye flights. It’s understandable because the flight leaves after midnight, and most passengers just want to go to sleep or already ate at the Star Alliance First Class Lounge
After taking off, the flight attendant gave out the food and drinks menu. She came around and took the drinks order first. I had to try their Rice Wine Sake for flying with a Japanese airline, which was good. They didn’t take any meal orders yet, but she brought three small appetizers to pair with Sake.

    Small Appetizers & Sake
After a while, she returned and asked if I would like something to eat off the menu. I chose the Japanese Cuisine set that consists of Kobachi, Shusai, and Steamed Rice. See the menu for the description of each item.
The food presentation was good, but I did not find the whole set tasty except for the fish. The fermented soybean was my least favorite because it did not taste good and was slimy. But otherwise, I was full and ready for bed.

    Lie-Flat Bed

I was seated in 2K by the window, and seat 2G in the middle across from me was empty. So when I asked the flight attendant to prepare the sky bed for me, she offered suite 2G being my “bedroom” and kept my 2K suite as a “lounging room.” That sounds wonderful to have two suites, considering how much each suite costs, around $14,000 apiece.

    Lie-flat Bed
The nice flight attendant did her thing and prepared the bed for me. It sure looked inviting. I went and changed into pajamas before settling in the suite. The flight attendant was proactive and asked if I’d like to wake up 2 hours before breakfast, and I said yes, and then I fell asleep.
The bed was very comfortable, and I love having 3 pillows, and I’m a hoarder when it comes to pillows. Everything was comfortable, and the door was great for an enjoyable night’s sleep to Tokyo.

    Crew Service

The crew service when it comes to Asian hospitality is always nice, gentle, and smiley friendly service. A minor issue is that her English wasn’t fluent enough, making it difficult to understand. But it wasn’t terribly bad; she provided superior service whenever I needed something.
The food and drinks service was slower than I hoped for, given only five of us were in the First Class cabin, and two crews were there.

    Wi-Fi

The complimentary Wi-Fi for ANA First Class was very generous. They offered a free Wi-Fi voucher, and you scratch off the access code on the back of the voucher and connect to ANA Wi-Fi for the entire flight time. The Wi-Fi wasn’t working at first, but after asking the crew, she got it working.

    Bathroom

The ANA First Class toilet is a standard airline toilet. No fancy shower like Emirates First Class, but what surprised me is that the toilet is a bidet toilet! That’s new to me, but we are talking about a Japanese airline here.
I love that the lavatory is always kept clean whenever I use it.

    Amenity Kit

In the First Class suite, ANA provides pajamas and a light jacket. They also offer an amenity kit with an eye mask, ear plugs, and makeup products.

    Before Landing

2 hours before landing, I was offered more food and drinks. I was hungry and ordered two items off the menu: Udon noodles and the rice bowl with pork belly.
The rice bowl pork belly was my favorite. The udon noodle said it came with garnished chicken, but I didn’t see any. Perhaps they were so small, but it came with a fried tofu on top of it. I did not enjoy that udon noodle. I finished the meal with a plate of fruits. I also ordered black tea with honey during that meal course. So yes, you can order anything from that menu as long as you can eat!

How To Book ANA First Class The Suite With Points?

Review: ANA NH105 First Class THE SUITE Boeing 777-300ER Los Angeles (LAX) to Tokyo Haneda (HND)
    ANA First Class The Suite
I redeemed 55,000 Virgin Atlantic points plus $393.30 for one way in the ANA First Class suite from LAX to Tokyo Haneda HND airport. I also took advantage of the Amex 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Points at the time, which sweetened the deal even more! The transfer was instant, so avoid transferring speculatively until you see availability.
Unfortunately, Virgin Atlantic has devalued this award. It now requires 72,500 Virgin Atlantic points plus taxes and fees for one-way in ANA First Class from West Coast to Japan. Still not a terrible redemption and your main concern is to find the ANA’s award availability for this! The Business Class The Room, the award has not been devalued yet, and the seats look as nice as the First Class The Suite
Award availability is tough but not impossible. Especially if you want to experience the new ANA First Class The Suite. Try to search far in advance or, better yet, closer to your departure date because ANA is known for releasing award seats during that time more than far in advance. Use United Airlines to search and call Virgin Atlantic to book if you want to redeem Virgin Atlantic points for ANA flights.
