Alaska Airlines Credit Card is one of the preferred airline credit cards among travelers who frequent Alaska Airlines. The annual Alaska Airlines Companion Fare discount and free checked bags are the most famous benefits that make the card worth keeping each year despite the $95 annual fee

However, for those who do not get value from these benefits but want to keep their credit history associated with this credit card, you can product change or downgrade your Alaska Airlines Credit Card to another Bank of America credit card with zero annual fees. Here’s how.

Before we begin, let’s take a quick look at Alaska Airlines Credit Card benefits:

Can You Downgrade Your Alaska Airlines Credit Card?

Yes, you can downgrade your Alaska Airlines Credit Card to another Bank of America credit card. This practice is known as “Alaska Airlines credit card product change.”
However, not all Bank of America agents are competent regarding the request to downgrade your Alaska Airlines Credit Card. If the agent tells you that you cannot or their system does not allow them to do that, simply hang up and call again. It took me three call attempts to downgrade my Alaska Airlines Credit Card to another Bank of America credit card with no annual fee.

Can You Product Change Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card?

Unfortunately, not.
You cannot product change your Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card, let alone downgrade it. That said, you can only product change the personal version of the Alaska Airlines Credit Card

How to Product Change Alaska Airlines Credit Card?

The process to product change Alaska Airlines Credit Card is quite easy if you get a Bank of America phone representative who knows how.
  • Pick up your phone and call the phone numbers on the back of your Alaska Airlines Credit Card.
  • Let the agent know you want to change your Alaska Airlines Credit Card to another Bank of America credit card with no annual fee.
    • It helps to know beforehand which Bank of America credit card you want to product change to.
    • If the agent tells you that you cannot product change your Alaska card or their system does not allow them to, simply hang up and call again.
  • The agent will proceed with your request by reading all the disclosed information and asking for your verbal approval to proceed.

How Soon to Product Change Alaska Airlines Credit Card?

It’s important to note that the product-changing Alaska Airlines Credit Card request does not take effect immediately once submitted. The request still has to go through reviews done by Bank of America before the change can be finalized. So, be patient and plan accordingly.
If you have the card’s annual fee balance that has not been paid off and are in the middle of the product change on your Alaska Airlines Credit Card, you will be penalized for the late payment. The knowledgeable Bank of America told me to schedule the minimum payment on the due date while the product change request is in process. Once the request is successfully completed, I should receive the minimum payment back. Fortunately, the request was successfully finalized before my scheduled minimum payment.
Therefore, I recommend that you plan accordingly. Per the agent I spoke to, the request can take up to 3 weeks to complete. Here’s my example timeline:
  • October 3: Called and requested to change Alaska Airlines Credit Card to Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card
    • I was told that the conversion request can take up to October 25.
    • The minimum payment is due for the annual fee balance on October 22.
  • October 12: I scheduled the $25 minimum payment to be paid on the October 22 due date. The conversion is still not completed.
  • October 13: I logged into my Bank of America account and noticed the new Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card account.
    • Therefore, my Alaska Airlines Credit Card was successfully converted to the Customized Cash Rewards credit card sooner than October 25.

Should You Product Change or Downgrade Your Alaska Airlines Credit Card?

If you still want to cancel the card after reviewing the card’s benefits, consider product changing or downgrading instead. Your decision on whether to close or product change depends on a couple factors:
  • How long have you had an Alaska Airlines Credit Card
  • Eligibility for the sign-up bonus offer again
Remember that you want to avoid closing the oldest credit card account because it can negatively impact your overall credit health. Personally, I have had an Alaska Airlines Credit Card for years, so I did not want to lose the credit age and history of the card. Therefore, changing it to another Bank of America card with no annual fee makes the most sense in my situation.
Secondly, it’s not ideal when you are still a cardholder if you are after the sign-up bonus offer on the personal Alaska Airlines Credit Card. The terms of the offer clearly state that: “This card may not be available to you if you currently have or have had the card in the preceding 24-month period.” In other words, you are NOT eligible to apply for the card and receive the sign-up bonus miles offer if you are a current card member or have had the card in the last 2 years. Therefore, changing your Alaska Airlines credit card to another credit card will make you eligible for the welcome offer again in 2 years. Remember that by product-changing your Alaska Airlines Credit Card to a particular Bank of America credit card, you also forfeit the sign-up welcome offer opportunity on that credit card.

Which Bank of America Card Should You Downgrade Alaska Airlines To?

Everyone’s situation is different regarding which credit card to get, which is the same when deciding which card to downgrade your Alaska Airlines Credit Card
At a minimum, you may want to consider the following:
  • The card has no annual fee
  • The card offers a good return on purchases
Bank of America has quite a few no-annual-fee credit cards; however, they are not created equally in terms of benefits. The Bank of America with no annual fee card that stands out the most to me is the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card because it offers the following cashback benefits, provided by Bank of America:
  • 3% cash back in the category of your choice, 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (on the first $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club purchases each quarter), and 1% cash back on all other purchases Calculate rewards
    • Your choice categories include gas & EV charging stations, online shopping, cable, streaming, Internet, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings.
  • Preferred Rewards members earn 25%-75% more cash back on every purchase. That means the 3% choice category could go up to 5.25%. The 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs could go up to 3.5% for the first $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club purchases each quarter, and the 1% for all other purchases could go up to 1.75%.
