During our trip to Lake Como, I used one Hilton Free Weekend Night Reward to check out Italy’s Hilton Lake Como property. While my anticipation and expectation of staying there were high, it was an underwhelming stay for me.
Nonetheless, the room rate at Hilton Lake Como is incredibly expensive during peak times in Lake Como and can go as high as at least $600 per night. I honestly did not feel that the property deserves that rate, so using Hilton Honors Points or Hilton Free Weekend Night Reward redemption is the way to go. However, the award availability is also tough to get, but I’ll share a tip with you to get the standard award room booked throughout this review.

Location
Hilton Lake Como is not centrally located within a quick walk to the tourist area of Piazza Del Duomo. However, if you enjoy walking and strolling along Lake Como (which you should), it is about a 20-30 minute walk to Piazza Del Duomo and the ferry dock to go to Bellagio, Varenna, etc.

The closest train station to Hilton Lake Como is Como San Giovanni Railway Station, so keep that in mind if you are taking a train to the property because there are two railway stations in Lake Como. The San Giovanni station is about 15-20 minutes from Hilton Lake Como, depending on how fast you walk. I recommend you take a quick taxi ride for about 7-8 Euro one-way if you do not want to walk or have suitcases to worry about. Taxis are waiting outside the station, and the hotel’s front desk can call one for you on the way back.
Room Upgrades
Unfortunately, as a Hilton Honors Diamond member, I did not receive a complimentary upgrade to a lake view room or a room with a balcony. Upon check-in, I specifically asked about upgrades to those room types, but they were not offered because the property was busy. I was there only one night, and it was a Friday, so I presumed there were weekend getaway vacationers.
It’s worth mentioning that Hilton Lake Como does upgrade Hilton Honors Diamond elite members to a lake view room with a balcony, and sometimes up to a suite room if available on check-in. If you are going during the off-peak times in Lake Como, I am sure you can score an upgrade easier.
The standard room at Hilton Lake Como is nice but small, and I would not call it a luxury to fit the expensive nightly rate. Below is the review of the room.

Room Review
As mentioned above, I did not receive a complimentary room upgrade as a Hilton Honors Diamond member. So the room we got assigned to was adequate to stay in for one clean and comfortable night.
The room is not spacious, but the king bed is huge, the pillows are wide with all the clean and nice amenities you can expect from a typical Hilton stay, and there’s also a long desk inside the guestroom.

A large sliding door looks impossible to slide open to a non-practical balcony because balcony space is limited, and the view is nothing to write about. It is probably still hard to see what I am talking about through the photo below.

Hilton Lake Como does not have an executive lounge for Hilton Honors Diamond elite members.
Welcome Amenity
Other than the complimentary breakfast benefit at check-in, I was not offered any other welcome gifts. However, a welcome note inside the room lets us know there’s a complimentary bottle of prosecco wine in the minibar to enjoy.

Hilton Honors Gold and Hilton Honors Diamond elite members receive complimentary breakfast at the on-site restaurant, Satin. The breakfast is served buffet-style, and it is full of a variety of food and drinks to enjoy. There are just so many options offered for both hot and cold items. Therefore, don’t miss that if you stay at Hilton Lake Como with elite status.
Breakfast starts at 7 AM. Upon entering the restaurant, simply let the greeter know your room number, and they will be able to see your Hilton Honors elite status. You do not need to sign any bills after you finish your breakfast.

- Terrazza – rooftop by the infinity pool, pool bar service is also available.
- Taffeta – is located on the ground floor with an elegant bar, and you can order food there too, including the street food pizza (open on certain days only, see photo below).
- Satin – is located on the ground floor and serves breakfast.

Early Check-In
We arrived at Hilton Lake Como in the afternoon, and they said the room was not ready. Honestly, throughout our travels in Europe, early check-in seems impossible to get regardless you have Hilton Honors elite status or not.
Late Check-Out
Hilton Lake Como offered me the late check-out up to 2 PM when asked, but unfortunately, I did not take the offer because we had a day trip to Bellagio and would not be able to come back by that 2 PM.
Please note that you can still use the swimming pool and spa shower during operating hours after checking out your room if needed.

Perhaps, one great amenity that Hilton Lake Como has is the infinity swimming pool located on the rooftop. The pool is not large, but it is a popular place for guests, and it can get really busy in the afternoon.
I also enjoy hanging out at the pool because of the nice atmosphere and stunning view of Lake Como and the mountains! I strongly recommend you allocate some time to enjoy the swimming pool at Hilton Lake Como.

The pool opens at 9 AM, but I dislike it being closed so early by 6 PM every day.
There’s also a pool bar service available around the pool area and some lounging chairs to enjoy the view of Lake Como.

How You Can Stay at Hilton Lake Como For Free?

Award Availability at Hilton Lake Como
While you can redeem Hilton Honors Points or Hilton Free Weekend Night Reward for a free stay at Hilton Lake Como, the property prefers to block standard award rooms for booking, especially during peak times in Lake Como. Standard rooms require lesser Hilton Honors points, and Hilton Free Weekend Night Reward can only be used to redeem the standard room.
I understand that hotels exist to make money, so they purposely do not release award rooms because they want to make “more” money from revenue bookings before they are willing to release award rooms for redemption. This is true with the Hilton Lake Como. So what would you do?
- Compose an email stating the date(s) you are looking to stay at Hilton Lake Como, and nicely ask them to open some standard room rates. Don’t say standard award or standard points room.
- Send the email to [email protected].
- Someone at Hilton Lake Como will reply to you and let you know if they are willing to open standard rooms for your requested dates.
- If they say impossible, be flexible and reply asking for one or two dates to be open rather than a longer stay, or change your stay dates if possible. Just work with the property to successfully redeem your free stay at Hilton Lake Como.
In my experience, my initial request was declined because I asked for a week’s stay, but then I replied and only asked for one night’s stay, and they opened the standard room for booking for me. Afterward, they asked me if I had booked the room and if they could close that particular date again 🙂
