The Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott is the closest hotel property to the Newark (EWR) airport. I had the opportunity to experience the hospitality at this property because I had a red-eye flight with Emirates that leaves from EWR to Athens, Greece.

I had an awesome stay with this Marriott property as a platinum elite member, and here’s the review:

    35,000 Points Per Night

The Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott is a category 5 Marriott property. Therefore, it requires 35,000 points per night, which means that you can use Marriott Free Night 35k Certificate to redeem for a free stay there.

I made the reservation with cash because the non-refundable advance payment rate was quite affordable at the time by booking well in advance. The rate was $113/night before tax.

    Location

In theory, the Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott is within walking distance to the EWR airport; however, due to traffic and highway in between, the hotel does not recommend guests to walk. The hotel offers 24 hours complimentary airport shuttle and it leaves every 15 minutes from the hotel’s lobby which is very punctual and convenient.

The pick-up and drop-off services are pretty fast because the hotel is only a 5-7 minutes drive away from the airport.

1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points or $10 Food & Drink Voucher

I arrived late at night for check-in, so I figured I’d be hungry at lunch the next day, so I picked the $10 food & drink voucher. But in the end, I didn’t get a chance to use it because of the concierge lounge access that I’ll talk about below. However, I was able to exchange that voucher back to points at checkout.

    Late Checkout 7 P.M.

My Emirates flight did not leave EWR until around midnight time the next day. So I kindly asked the hotel for a really late checkout in my reservation. Generally speaking, complimentary 4 P.M. late check-out is available for any Marriott Platinum Elite members. The onsite manager was willing to waive the late checkout fee beyond that 4 P.M. for me and allowed me to stay until 7 P.M., complimentary. I was very much appreciated that.

    Room Upgrade

As a Marriott Platinum Elite member, my room was upgraded to the runway view room. That allowed me to spot planes come and go through the good size window in the room.

The bed is comfortable and comes with the usual Marriott amenities. The bathroom’s style is pretty outdated but it’s practical. The room temperature though in my room was pretty warm, so I had to really set the thermostat to around 65-66 Fahrenheit degrees. I’m usually okay with 70 degrees at room temperature.

    Concierge Lounge Access

My room is located on the 9th floor and the concierge lounge is located on the highest 10th floor. They gave me access to the lounge also as a Marriott Platinum Elite member.

Access is enabled through the room’s key. Just tap the room’s key on the reader and enter the lounge. There are friendly attendants/servers in the lounge but they do not check/verify your access. It makes sense because if you can enter, that means you can access the lounge with your room’s key.

Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott Lounge

The concierge lounge is pretty amazing. I had the chance to enjoy both breakfast and dinner time. I love the fact that the lounge has seats that are facing the runway as well so you can watch planes ascend and descend while enjoying the meal and drinks.

Please note that the lounge does not open on Saturday. The lounge opens breakfast on Sunday at 7 A.M. and then dinner in the evening at 5:30 P.M.
The hot items for both breakfast and dinner were incredible when I was there. I had a late checkout at 7 P.M. and therefore I was able to enter the lounge at 5:30 P.M. and enjoyed the amazing dinner dishes such as steak, southwestern chicken soup, salad, and drinks. See the pictures below.
For more information on the hours, you should reach out to the property directly by calling +1 (973) 623-0006 and press 0 for the operator/front desk.

    Conclusion

The Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott is a Category 5 property that requires only 35,000 points per night. If you have the Marriott Free Night 35k Certificate, this is definitely a solid redemption if you are looking to stay by the EWR airport before your early flight or after your late arrival flight.

If you also hold a Marriott Platinum Elite status with Marriott, there are a lot of values to be had while staying at this property such as late check-out, room upgrade, and access to the amazing concierge lounge for complimentary food and drinks throughout the day. In fact, I was so glad that I got to eat dinner at the Marriott’s lounge instead of the airport lounge for my Emirates First Class flight that day because Emirates uses SAS lounge for Business and First class passengers at the Newark airport, and that lounge just does not do it for me in terms of food.
